When to sign up for each sport

Most leagues sign up a season ahead, and the popular divisions fill before registration officially closes. Put these windows on your calendar now:

Late fees are common: $50 at Davis Little League, $20 at Rocklin Little League’s fall ball, and Roseville PONY’s late rate is $45 above its regular one. Many leagues also ask each family for volunteer hours (Roseville PONY asks 4.5 a player) or a buyout, so read the fine print before you pay.

Little League vs PONY vs Cal Ripken baseball

All three are youth baseball programs with local, volunteer-run leagues. They differ in how they set ages and divisions, and around here your town often decides which you get: Natomas, the Pocket, Folsom, Davis and Rancho Cordova play Little League, Roseville plays PONY, Rocklin has both, and Elk Grove plays Cal Ripken.

Roseville PONY’s FAQ sums up the difference: PONY keeps each division to a two-year age bracket and lengthens the field as kids grow, while Little League overlaps ages and sorts players by skill. Neither is better. Pick the league your address allows, then the division your child’s age puts them in.

Little League boundaries and age cutoffs: how to check

Every Little League has a mapped boundary, and two leagues can’t overlap. Folsom’s two leagues, for example, split roughly along Oak Avenue. Here’s how to work out where your child can play:

  1. Find your child’s league age. For baseball it’s their age on Aug 31 of the season year, so for spring 2027 use Aug 31, 2027; for softball it’s their age on Dec 31, 2026. Little League’s age charts and calculator do the math, and league age can differ from actual age.
  2. Under 8? Pick any league. Since 2025, players league age 4 to 7 can register with any Little League, regardless of address, and keep playing there as long as they don’t skip a season.
  3. 8 and older: home or school. Enter your home address, then your child’s school address, in Little League’s League Finder. Either one qualifies your child.
  4. Gather proof. Leagues ask for three documents showing your address, such as a driver’s license, a SMUD or PG&E bill and a water or cable bill, or one school enrollment form signed by the principal.
  5. Moved or want to switch? A league can keep a player who moves out of its boundary. Anything else needs a waiver from Little League International, requested through the league.

PONY and Cal Ripken leagues set their own areas: check the league’s boundary tool or ask its registrar before you pay.

Rec, club or AYSO soccer?

Sacramento-area soccer clubs usually run two tracks, and the sign-up rules differ:

  • Recreational (rec). Anyone who registers plays, with volunteer parent coaches, one or two practices a week and Saturday games. The youngest play in house; older teams play nearby clubs. Rec seasons in this guide cost $50 (Davis Legacy) to $195 (Elk Grove Soccer’s late rate), with uniforms often extra.
  • Super Rec. Rec teams for teens, U14 to U19, that play other clubs in NorCal’s Super Rec league with fewer practices than competitive teams.
  • Competitive (club or comp). Players try out, coaches pick teams, and families commit to every practice and game, earlier starts (Lincoln’s comp practices begin in June) and longer drives. Lincoln Youth Soccer’s comp teams travel as far as Chico, Napa and Fairfield. Some clubs run bridges from rec, like Roseville’s Rec-2-Comp and El Dorado Hills’ Jr. Academy ($680 for fall, $340 for spring).
  • AYSO. The American Youth Soccer Organization is a national, volunteer-run rec program built on rules such as “Everyone Plays” and balanced teams. None of the clubs listed here is an AYSO region; find one by ZIP code at ayso.org.

Age groups changed this year. US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, AYSO and MLS NEXT approved a move from birth-year groups to Aug 1 to July 31 groups, starting in fall 2026, so most kids now play with their grade. In Lincoln’s chart, for example, U6 means born Aug 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021.

Help paying for youth sports

Ask before you skip a season over cost. Davis Little League says it won’t turn away any child over money, and several others have aid:

  • Davis Little League’s Registration Assistance Program covers all or part of the fee, or sets up a payment plan, and answers within 7 days of registration closing.
  • City of Sacramento scholarships cover its $30 Jr. NBA and NFL Flag leagues (Jr. NBA applications are due Dec 3, 2026), and Junior Giants is free.
  • YMCA Y-Assist helps with Y basketball fees in Sacramento and Woodland.
  • City of Lincoln scholarships pay up to 50% of fees for its own youth sports programs.
  • Davis Legacy, Elk Grove Soccer and Sacramento Youth Flag Football each run financial aid programs; ask when you register.
  • West Sacramento offers scholarships for its flag football league.
  • Coach. Volunteer coaches’ kids play free at Davis Legacy, and at Davis Little League managing a team is the only way to choose your practice days.

Sibling discounts are common too: $15 a sibling at North Natomas Little League and $10 at Lincoln Youth Soccer.

Questions parents ask

When does Little League sign-up start in Sacramento?

Most Sacramento-area Little Leagues open spring registration in October or November and close in early January. For spring 2027, North Natomas Little League is already open and closes Jan 6; Pocket Little League opens Nov 15; Davis Little League opens in mid-November; and Folsom American opens in November. Evaluations for older players follow in January, practices start in February and games in March. If a league hasn’t posted dates, join its mailing list.

What’s the difference between Little League and PONY baseball?

Little League sets ages by Aug 31 for baseball and groups kids by age and skill, with overlapping ages in each division and a draft from league age 8. PONY uses two-year age brackets, such as Pinto for 7 and 8 and Mustang for 9 and 10, set by age on April 30, and lengthens the bases and pitching distance as kids move up. Around Sacramento, Roseville and Rocklin have PONY leagues; most other towns play Little League.

How do I know which Little League my child can play for?

Enter your home address, then your child’s school address, in Little League’s League Finder. From league age 8, your child can play for the league whose boundary includes either one. Younger players, league age 4 to 7, can choose any Little League since 2025, and can stay there if they keep playing every season. Expect to show three proofs of address or a school form signed by the principal when you register.

What age can kids start flag football in Sacramento?

Most NFL FLAG leagues here start at 5, and RCSA’s winter league in Natomas takes 4- to 6-year-olds in its youngest division. Sacramento Youth Flag Football’s youngest group is 6U (ages 5 and 6), the City of Sacramento and West Sacramento leagues take ages 5 to 14, and several leagues run girls-only divisions. Flag football has no tackling, and players wear flag belts and mouthpieces.

What are California’s rules for youth tackle football?

California’s Youth Football Act (Health and Safety Code 124241) limits youth tackle teams to two full-contact practices a week during the preseason and season, no more than 30 minutes of full contact in a day, and none in the offseason. Coaches need first aid, CPR and AED certification, and someone at practice must have the authority to pull a player who shows signs of a concussion. Ask any tackle program how it follows the law.

What’s the difference between rec and competitive soccer?

Rec soccer takes everyone who signs up, uses volunteer parent coaches and plays nearby, usually in a fall season from August to November that registers in spring. Competitive soccer holds tryouts in late spring, starts practicing in early summer and expects players at every practice and game, with higher fees and longer travel. If your child isn’t sure, start with rec; clubs like Roseville Soccer Club run programs that help rec players move up.

How much does youth baseball cost in the Sacramento area?

For spring, expect roughly $150 to $275 a player, depending on division and how early you register. Roseville PONY charges $170 to $210 early and up to $275 late for 2027, North Natomas Little League $200 to $250, and Elk Grove Youth Baseball charged $180 to $215 in 2026. Prices usually include a jersey and hat; you buy the glove, pants and cleats. Many leagues add volunteer hours or a buyout.

How we made this list

We searched the web (Exa) for Little League, PONY, soccer, football and basketball sign-ups across the Sacramento area, then read each league’s own pages in October 2026, and Little League International’s rules for boundaries and ages. We left out leagues outside the region that the search turned up (several share Sacramento-area names), sites that looked like templates, and leagues whose pages we couldn’t read; where a league hadn’t posted 2027 details, we give last season’s and say so.
