Pediatric Speech Therapy in Los Angeles
Clinics, in-home therapists and bilingual practices from Downtown to Long Beach, with what each one treats and how LA families pay for therapy.
Pediatric speech therapy in Los Angeles is done by licensed speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in clinics, in your home or by video. Look for ASHA’s CCC-SLP credential and a California license. If your child is under 3, your regional center’s Early Start program evaluates at no charge and arranges services; from age 3, your school district can provide therapy through an IEP. Otherwise families use insurance, Medi-Cal or private pay. Prices vary: one practice on this list charges $500 for an evaluation.

When to get a speech evaluation
Every child talks on their own schedule, but some signs are worth a professional look. By around age 2, most children use and understand at least 50 words and put two or more words together, like “more water” (ASHA).
Other signs worth asking your pediatrician or an SLP about:
- A toddler with few words, or who isn’t combining words by 2.
- Speech that people outside the family can’t understand.
- Stuttering that worries you or your child.
- Trouble following directions, answering questions or telling what happened.
- Frustration or meltdowns because your child can’t get the message across.
ASHA’s advice is simple: don’t wait if you’re concerned, and have your child’s hearing tested if you find yourself repeating things or talking loudly (ASHA).
How to choose a speech therapist for your child
Start with the basics, then match the therapist to your child.
- Check credentials. CCC-SLP after a name means the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Certificate of Clinical Competence, which you can verify on ASHA’s site. Then look up the California license in the state’s license search; the board is the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board.
- Match the need. Ask how many children like yours the therapist has treated, whether that’s a late-talking toddler, apraxia, stuttering, autism or a child who uses AAC. Training you’ll see on sites here includes Hanen (parent coaching for early language), PROMPT (motor speech) and Natural Language Acquisition (for gestalt language processors).
- Pick the setting. Clinics can offer sensory-friendly rooms and other therapies under one roof. Home visits fold practice into your routines. Video sessions skip the drive. Many practices offer two or three of these.
- Mind the language. If your family speaks Spanish or another language at home, ask for a therapist who can test and treat in it. For Early Start, the evaluation must be done in the language your child uses at home when possible (DDS).
- Ask the practical questions. How long and how often are sessions? Will I be in the room? How will we measure progress? Do you take my insurance, or give a superbill?
Who pays for speech therapy in Los Angeles
There are five main ways to pay, and many families combine them.
- Early Start (birth to 3). Your regional center evaluates at no charge, and eligibility isn’t based on income or immigration status. A child can qualify with a delay of 25% or more in an area such as expressive or receptive communication, or with certain diagnoses, and services can include speech and language therapy. You may be asked to use your insurance for ongoing therapy (DDS). Find yours in our regional centers guide.
- Your school district (3 and up). Early Start ends at 3. About 90 days before, your service coordinator plans the move with you, which can include special education through your school district (DDS). If your child is 3 or older and wasn’t in Early Start, ask your school district in writing for a speech and language assessment.
- Medi-Cal. Under Medicaid’s EPSDT rule, Medi-Cal (California’s Medicaid program) must cover all medically necessary services for members under 21, which can include speech therapy (Medicaid.gov). Start with your child’s doctor and health plan.
- Private insurance. Coverage varies by plan, so call and ask. On this list, Boundless is in network with Anthem Blue Cross and KM Speech Therapy is a Kaiser Panorama City provider partner; others give superbills you can send to your insurer.
- Private pay. Each practice sets its own prices, so ask before you book. Power of Play in Pico Rivera, for example, lists $500 for an evaluation and $1,750 for a bilingual independent educational evaluation.
What happens at the first visit
Many practices start with a free phone call, then a formal evaluation. Expect questions about your child’s history, standardized tests, and time watching your child play and talk. Averhart Collins describes its evaluations as a mix of conversation, observation, standardized assessments and therapist-child interaction; Power of Play’s take 60 to 90 minutes and end with findings, a diagnosis if one applies, and a treatment plan.
If therapy is recommended, you’ll get goals and a suggested schedule. Many therapists coach parents during sessions, because practice between visits matters. In Early Start, services happen in everyday places like your home or child care, with the therapist coaching you as your child’s main teacher (DDS).
Questions parents ask
What does a pediatric speech therapist do?
A speech-language pathologist (SLP), often called a speech therapist, evaluates and treats how children understand and use language, say sounds, speak fluently and use language with other people. Many also treat feeding and swallowing problems, and they help children who don’t speak yet communicate with AAC, such as picture boards or speech-generating devices. In California, SLPs are licensed by the state board, and many also hold ASHA’s CCC-SLP certificate.
When should a toddler start speech therapy?
There’s no minimum age. If your child isn’t using about 50 words or putting two words together by around age 2, or you’re simply worried, ask for an evaluation; ASHA advises not to wait. In California, a child under 3 can be evaluated through Early Start at no charge by calling your regional center. Several practices on this list work with babies and toddlers at home.
Is speech therapy free for kids in Los Angeles?
It can be. For children under 3, Early Start evaluations and service coordination cost nothing, though you may be asked to use your insurance for ongoing therapy. From age 3, your school district handles special education, including speech therapy written into an IEP. Medi-Cal covers medically necessary services for members under 21. Private therapy is paid through insurance or out of pocket.
Does insurance cover speech therapy for kids?
It depends on the plan. Call the number on your card and ask whether speech therapy is covered, whether you need a referral or prior authorization, and how many visits are allowed. On this list, Boundless is in network with Anthem Blue Cross and KM Speech Therapy is a Kaiser Panorama City provider partner. Practices that don’t take your plan may give a superbill you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement.
Can my child get speech therapy in Spanish in LA?
Yes. All of KM Speech Therapy’s clinicians are bilingual in English and Spanish, Hola Clinic works in English and/or Spanish, Power of Play evaluates and treats in either language or both, and Play & Talk’s founder is bilingual in Spanish. Ask for testing in both languages so the evaluation can tell a language difference from a language disorder. Early Start evaluations must be in your child’s home language when possible.
How we made this list
We searched the web for pediatric speech therapy across Los Angeles County, read each practice’s own pages, and kept 15 that clearly treat children, aiming for a spread across LA and a mix of clinics, home-based therapists and bilingual practices. Every detail about a practice comes from its own site as of October 2026; we didn’t use ratings or reviews. Insurance, prices and openings change, so confirm when you call.
No one paid to be on it. It’s information to start from, not medical or legal advice: check services, costs and coverage with each provider before you book. Spotted something out of date, or run a place that belongs here? Write to hello@summerground.com.
