Tips for skating with little ones

Rinks here put the starting age at about 3 to 5. Downtown Sacramento recommends skaters be at least 3, Skatetown’s classes start at 4½, and the smallest rental skates at Downtown and Folsom are youth size 8, which Folsom says fits about a 4- or 5-year-old.

  • Bring a helmet. A bike helmet works. Skatetown no longer lends helmets; Downtown Sacramento rents them.
  • Rent a skate aid. Skatetown rents sleds and skate helpers for $10, and an adult or a strong skater must push the sleds. Downtown Sacramento rents ice scooters by the half hour, Vacaville rents walkers in December, and Folsom has skate assists for kids 12 and under.
  • Dress for falls. Gloves or mittens keep fingers safe on the ice, warm layers help at outdoor rinks, and thick socks help skates fit. Downtown Sacramento sells socks if you forget.
  • Pick a family session. At Skatetown, skip Saturday 7–9 p.m., which is geared to teens and young adults.
  • Book Folsom ahead. Tickets are timed and sold online, and sessions often sell out; weekends and the weeks around Christmas and New Year’s are busiest.
  • Watch the weather. Downtown Sacramento closes when it rains hard; Folsom stays open in rain but closes for lightning, and sun and warm days soften its ice.

What happened to Iceland?

Iceland Ice Skating Rink, at 1430 Del Paso Boulevard in North Sacramento, opened in 1940 and ran without a break until March 2010, when a suspected arson fire gutted it. The rink’s metal pipes under the ice survived, and Iceland reopened as an outdoor rink in 2011 until the pandemic shut it in 2020.

In November 2023 the City of Sacramento approved a forgivable loan of about $1.3 million for a new roof and $125,000 for the historic facade, with conditions that include public skating hours and free lessons. Construction was delayed by added safety upgrades, and in November 2025 the Sacramento Bee reported the plan had passed an initial city review, with the owner hoping to start building early in 2026 and open as soon as mid-2026.

As of mid-October 2026, Iceland’s own website still reads Rebuilding in 2026 and gives no reopening date, so it isn’t on our list. Check skatesacramento.com for news; once it reopens, it plans to run year-round under a roof.

Questions parents ask

Is Iceland ice rink in Sacramento open?

No. Iceland, at 1430 Del Paso Blvd, has been closed since 2020, and as of mid-October 2026 its website still says it is rebuilding, with no reopening date. A rebuild with a new roof has city funding, and in late 2025 the owner hoped to open by mid-2026. Until it does, the closest year-round rink is Skatetown Ice Arena in Roseville, and from Nov 4 the Downtown Sacramento Ice Rink at 7th and K.

When does the Downtown Sacramento ice rink open in 2026?

It opens Wednesday, Nov 4, 2026 and runs through Monday, Jan 18, 2027 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) in Ali Youssefi Square at 7th and K Streets. Regular hours are Tuesday to Thursday 2 to 9 p.m. and Friday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; it’s closed Mondays except holidays. Admission is $15, or $8 for kids 6 and under, skates included, and tickets are sold at the rink.

How much is ice skating at Skatetown in Roseville?

General admission is $16, plus $4 to rent skates; kids 4 and under skate free with a paying adult. A one-hour weekday session at 12:15 costs $13 to $15 with skates. From Nov 23, 2026 to Jan 18, 2027, and on Presidents’ Day, the holiday rate is $22 with or without skates. Sled and skate-helper rentals are $10. Skatetown takes no bills over $20 and gives no refunds.

When is the Folsom ice rink open, and how much does it cost?

The Historic Folsom Ice Rink runs Nov 7, 2026 to Jan 18, 2027, with 90-minute sessions starting every two hours: from 2 p.m. Monday to Wednesday and from 10 a.m. Thursday to Sunday and over the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. Last season tickets were $20 for ages 10 and up and $16 for ages 4–9, plus fees, skates included; its group page lists $20–22 and $16–18 this season, depending on the date. Tickets are timed and non-refundable.

Is there an ice skating rink in Elk Grove?

We found no permanent ice rink in Elk Grove. The city’s free Illumination Holiday Festival at District56 brings a pop-up rink on Saturday, Dec 5, 2026, from 3 to 8 p.m. (synthetic ice with skates provided in past years). The closest real-ice rink is the Downtown Sacramento Ice Rink from Nov 4. Kings Skate Country on Franklin Boulevard is a roller rink, with a Saturday Tiny Tot session for kids 8 and under.

What age can kids start ice skating lessons?

Around age 4 or 5 for group classes. Skatetown’s Learn to Skate classes in Roseville take beginners from 4½, and the Historic Folsom Ice Rink’s Grown-Ups & Gliders class puts preschoolers under 5 on the ice with a parent. Younger children can try a public session with a skate aid and a helmet; Downtown Sacramento recommends skaters be at least 3, and its smallest rental skates are youth size 8.

Where can you ice skate near Davis?

Davis has no ice rink of its own that we found. The two closest are Vacaville Ice Sports, west on I-80 at 551 Davis St in Vacaville, open all year ($18 with skates) with a decorated Winter Wonderland from Dec 11, 2026 to Jan 3, 2027, and, to the east, the Downtown Sacramento Ice Rink from Nov 4. Both include skates in the price.

How we made this list

We searched the web (Exa) for ice rinks and holiday skating around Sacramento, then read each rink’s own pages in October 2026, plus city and news pages for Iceland and the Elk Grove festival. We left out roller rinks, Iceland (still closed), and same-named places that turned up in searches: the Roseville, Minnesota oval, Davis County, Utah’s rinks and an Elk Grove Village, Illinois arena. A few details (Downtown Sacramento’s helmet and scooter rentals, Folsom’s skate assists) come from last season’s pages.
