KEEN one-to-one sports and fitness programs

Ages 5+ · Free

Every athlete is paired one-to-one with a trained volunteer coach in open, unstructured, non-competitive sessions that are tailored to the individual athlete. The core program, KEEN Sports, takes place in a gym with a variety of sports equipment; other programs include KEEN Basketball, KEEN Swim, KEEN Dance, KEEN Art, KEEN Yoga, KEENFit, special events, Caregiver Connections and KEEN Online. KEEN is open to youth ages 5-21 with physical or developmental disabilities and accepts every child regardless of the nature or severity of the disability. Programs run in seasons (fall, winter, spring and summer), and not every program is offered every season. KEEN describes its programs as free. Registration is quarterly: families apply through New Athlete Enrollment and email the office to ask whether spaces are open. Registered athletes only, no drop-ins, and missed sessions should be reported. Activities are held on Saturdays and Sundays.

KEEN Los Angeles is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) and an affiliate of KEEN USA. KEEN is modeled on a program started in Oxford, England by Elliott Portnoy, who brought it to the Washington, DC area in 1992, and the organization describes 30+ years of service. Its local board is made up of community leaders, parents and volunteers. Its mission is free, non-competitive, one-on-one recreation and fitness for children and young adults with disabilities, paired with trained volunteer coaches.
