Youth Sailing Camp

Ages 11–17 · $300 · Full day · 10am–4pm

Beginning, intermediate and advanced sailing courses taught by LA County lifeguards at the Boathouse at Burton Chace Park in Marina del Rey. Students learn sailing terms, boat maintenance and rigging, knot tying, tacking, docking and ocean sailing on 14-foot Capri sailboats and Laser sailboats, with time on a Catalina 275 Sport near the end of a session. The 2026-27 winter camp runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in three sessions (Dec 21-24, Dec 28-31, Jan 4-8) for ages 11-17, and applicants must pass a 100-yard swim test in 2:20 or less. The program says participants include youth with mobility challenges and special needs. The fee is $300 for 4-day sessions and $375 for 5-day sessions and includes instruction, all equipment and a T-shirt. Financial aid is available for qualifying families. Applications and flyers are available in English and Spanish.

About Russell Walker W.A.T.E.R. Youth Program

The Russell Walker W.A.T.E.R. Youth Program is run by the LA County Department of Beaches and Harbors, with instruction from LA County lifeguards. It is named after the late Assistant Chief Lifeguard who founded it in 1986 and has grown to serve up to 6,000 youth a year from diverse, underserved or special needs populations. Participants include youth with mobility challenges and special needs, as well as youth from underserved communities or who are system-involved. It offers two programs: a Youth Sailing Camp and Ocean Safety Day.
