Sunflower Montessori Preschool & Day Care is a Montessori program for children ages 2 to 6 at 15520 Sherman Way in Van Nuys, where it has taught children since 1980. Classrooms are mixed-age. Children choose their own work in a prepared environment, and teachers work alongside them rather than lecturing from the front of the room. Young children learn to read by tracing sandpaper letters and learn math with golden beads, with an emphasis on independence, discovery and community. The school is open 7am to 6pm year-round, with full-time and part-time schedules and extended day care. The facility was recently rebuilt, and it draws families from Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana, Studio City and North Hollywood.
